Setting Twitter Goals

Once you have answers to these questions, you will have a good sense of the direction you plan to head with your Twitter efforts.  Now let’s get a little more specific regarding what you actually want to accomplish.

Here are some examples of Twitter business goals:

• To share information with existing customers about products, services, and industry so they are well-informed consumers.

• Reach out to potential customers who could benefit from the product, service, and industry information I share with my customers on Twitter.

• To direct followers to information about products, services, and industry that appears on my blog and website.

• To ask and answer questions with peers so I can learn more about my industry, recent trends, and best practices.

• To communicate with my contractors and vendors to make sure that my projects and supplies stay on schedule.

• To communicate with my business partners about new and existing business we work on together.

• To solve customer service issues with my existing customers.

As you can see, ‘increasing number of followers’ is not a goal. I started out wanting to increase the number of followers, but that was really just to jump start the exercise of using Twitter and to give me instant gratification. Now, my primary objective is to share information in my main areas of interest (search engine optimization, writing, and small business) in hopes of helping my peers or potential customers. In the process, I hope to continue developing my knowledge base and become an expert in those areas.
