If you aren’t already trying these methods to increase your inbound links, give them a whirl and see the results. It’s a good idea to have your site set up with Google Analytics or similar measurement program before you make changes so that you can gauge which activities netted which results. Also, with the analytics program you can usually identify the source of any traffic that comes from a referral site.

1) Social Media – It is logical if you have a presence on any social networks that you would link back to your website from there. In addition to making sure your posts and tweets send visitors to your site, there are often opportunities for you to share links on other’s social networks. For example, if you are part of a group on LinkedIn that discusses photography, you many offer comments on the site linking back to your blog about lighting portraits. Be sure that you are contributing to the conversation, not jumping at opportunities to sell.

2) Internal links – One way to keep visitors on your site is to include links between pages. Help guide them to where they should go next through persuasive copy and compelling calls to action. When using links within a paragraph (called ‘anchor text’) make every effort to use keywords as the links. This shows the search engines how important that keyword is on your site. Keep navigation straight forward and logical. If it’s too tricky for a person to find the information they want, you can bet the search engines will be challenged as well.

3) Online publications – I’m fortunate to be part of a team that develops a quarterly publication for our local Chamber of Commerce. This newsletter is available online in a ‘flip’ format which gives the reader a simulated experience of reading a magazine. Within the publication, all web addresses are live links meaning that advertisers have a link to their website embedded in their ad. It also gives an opportunity to writers and contributors to also link to their websites. There is a definite advantage to being a part of such a publication.

4) Email signature – Anytime you develop ‘content’ online, determine if there’s a way to include a link to your website or blog. A simple opportunity is within your email signature. This is also a handy spot to include links to your social profiles as well.
